Toastmaster Emma Hayes deftly ran this morning’s meeting, number 831, drawing inspiration for the theme of “Power to the People” from the Brexit vote, where people power seemingly flew in the face of the experts’ warnings and prognostications.

First up speaker Steve Mydlowski’s speech “How long is it?” provided a fascinating insight into the history of our units of measurement, particularly those used in Steve’s profession of surveying. Steve noted surveying was an ancient profession but not the oldest in the world (which I assume is accounting?). Steve explained the derivation of terms such as acre, chain, link, furlong, and noted that a “foot” was literally the length of someone foot. An interesting and informative speech.

Next up was Kevin Cusack with his speech “Heat in India”, an account of his holiday in India at the height of the Indian summer. Kevin’s speech was full of humorous anecdotes about his holiday, which he noted was a change of pace from his usual destination of Featherston! Kevin got his point across about the heat with expression like “blisteringly hot” (the food), “microwaveably hot” (the sun). In an interesting departure from standard speeches, Kevin’s seemed to be sponsored by Singapore Airlines whose creature comforts he was particularly taken by.

Deb McAlpine was the meeting’s last speaker with “Ageing like a good wine”. Deb’s speech was on the ease and dangers of making assumptions about people’s age and capabilities and was full of examples of these incorrect assumptions. A thought provoking speech delivered is Deb’s usual confident, relaxed manner…and with no notes.
Rodney Ford squeezed in 7 table topic speeches, all with a power theme, ranging from rubber band power to nuclear. Congratulations to guests Mark, Louise and Nathan for all participating. Great effort!

Mo Yakubu did such a good job of the table topic evaluations he received the morning’s Toastie award.
Another entertaining meeting, chock full of humour, interesting content, achievement and learning.
