Meeting #862

Posted by on Mar 15, 2017 in Meetings

Vivien was Toast Master. She used props and shared tips throughout the meeting to help us prepare for an Emergency. Grammarian David Clarkson choose the word nemesis and several toastmasters managed to fit it into their speeches

Alana was in “La la  Alana land” driving tractors as an eleven-year-old. She couldn’t reach the pedals and kept jumping out of the tractors, her brother was the one who crashed a big hole in the bran.
Brent told us stories of tandem happiness without notes. Communication is key when working in tandem. On their cycle touring adventure across Canada. Claire on the back of the bike was Governance and Brent on the front was Operations.
Essentials in their kit included:

New Zealand t-shirts, so people wouldn’t think they were Australian’s.
Claire’s hair dryer that wasn’t any use for Brent he felt they should ditch it to lighten the load.

Rodney gave a speech from the Communications Manual. He’d last given this speech back in 2002. “Messing around with boats”. Rodney’s got a remote control yacht and has been a part of the Christchurch Model Yacht Club for years. It’s a passion of his, we saw the boat and learned all about how he got into to and were all invited to come check it out.

Highlights from the Table Topics organised by Denise
Natalie spoke about how important it is to know your neighbors in an emergency.
Helen lost in the bush after a whiteout. Whistles couldn’t be heard. Following the stream, the group came to unclimbable bluffs. They built a bivouac but were rescued by the Mt Peel ranger.

Meeting 859 – Zephyrlargus

Posted by on Feb 23, 2017 in Meetings

Zephyrlargus meeting 859, a typical Terrelle made up word, coming from the word Zephyr – a light wind and Largus – abundance

You know when Terrelle is charge the meeting is going to be quirky and full of laughter and this meeting did not disappoint.

Jennifer our grammarian started the meeting of with a poem about wind

Speaker one – Gary Musson – Just a little faster

Who in this room has not received a speeding infringement? We sat looking sheepishly guilty.

Gary talked about his regular trip to his holiday home in the sounds. He discussed the changes in the speed limit due to the earthquake however the point of his speech was with modern cars that are built to go faster could we not have the speed limit increased a little on the open roads

Terelle encouraged us to use a new word in each new speech we do.

Speaker 2 – David Clarkson  - His Story

After a week off being on edge with living by the Port Hills fires, David told us his story, David lives up the hill where the cordons went up. David reflected on a time when he was flying in an 1980 aircraft around Mt Cook. During the flight the person next to him was scared with fear, this moment in time kept with David to this day. On Wednesday David noticed the flames and smoke moving towards his home. He gathered his medals, work gear, toiletries and prepared to be evacuated,  He and his wife Margaret had flights that were due to be paid for by the Thursday so positively thinking Margaret paid the tickets that day.  Wednesday night the flames got intense David saw the same fear in Margaret that he saw in the guy in the plane and decided it was time to leave there home and wait in a safe place.

Speaker 3 -Helen McLeod – Under Fire

Helen speech was based on ‘Parents of primary school children who are truant’.  The audience participated by being the parents who had been called to a meeting about there truant children.  Helen started by explaining how she understand how children can become truant.  She was not there to judge but listen. Helen noted that the parents should explain to the school if the child has a medical condition, if we feel they have medical condition but haven’t seen the doctor it’s free under 13. Helen covered anxiety with some symptoms and dealing with it.  Helen then took questions from the parents, they were upfront difficult questions.

Mark Glanville reminded us that the Area contest is on 27 Feb with Roydon and Sabine represented Boaters, also don’t forget some members stay for breakfast after the meeting.

Table topic

Issac our Table Topic Master had a bag of stuff from his car for participants to take an item and talk about it.

Natalie pulled out a car phone charger and explained it was no longer needed due to everything being solar

Sandra pulled out sunscreen 50+. Sandra had researched sunscreen for the grandkids and Sandra mentioned she would use it for a massage on her partner for protection.

Roydon pulled out keys and mentioned it was wedding anniversary which he reflected on a party 18 years 1 week he went with green hair and meet his wife to be.

Posted by on Jul 23, 2016 in Meetings

Dannys Top Mobile Apps – Our on site gadget/app man Danny de Hek enlightened us with some useful day to day APP’s such as ‘Scannable’,  you can scan those pesty business cards up in to your contacts quickly and efficiently.  OR ‘One Password’ which holds all your passwords and you wont ever have to type in a password.

Speaker One – Joy Chen, a new comer to Boaters, did her ice breaker.  Joy didnt talk about herself but told a story about Perfect People, it was a story of the perfect american girl that struggled to keeping up with being perfect that lead her to having eating disorders.  Brilliant told Joy.

Speaker Two – Brent Chatterton and the West Coast Passport.  Brent mentioned the way to get a West Coast passport is you either have to be born there or if you move there you have to live like forever there before getting a passport.  Brent then went on to tell us his journey of missing the early warning signs of Labour and sitting on a remote lake in Kanerie meant a mad dash by ambulance and air ambulance to Ch-ch with their first born Phoebe who nearly got her West Coast Passport.

Speaker Three – Alannah Vickery and Its not OK.  Alannah bought to home the truths about living in abusive relations, the statistics are horrific, Alannah wanted to get a message across to the audience to watch for the signs and speak up if you feel you know someone who needs help and take a stand.  Very effective speech.

Table top Master Alan Calder got up 5 lucky speakers – topic was Believe it or not.

Natalie Perzylo – Believing in Easter Bunny
Caleb Verco – Did the man land on the moon

Meeting 818 – 1 April 2016

Posted by on Apr 2, 2016 in Meetings

Some were fooled—but all had fun.

What do you expect at a Boaters meeting held on April 1st?

Sergeant at Arms Sabine threatened us with an 80s theme (some were fooled). Danny then masqueraded as our Toastmaster (not). The real Toastmaster of the day, Terelle Hegarty, then proceeded to lead us in a well planned meeting flavoured with her agile wit. Grammarian of the day Rachel tuned-up our sentence structure followed by three awesome speeches.

Congratulation to Mo Yakubu for his outstanding icebreaker—“How did I end up here?” An interesting insight into his passions and visions. We’re glad you ended up at Boaters.

Experienced toastmaster Brent Ruru gave us mental images of him dancing and singing to the sounds of Olivia Newton John while doing the dusting wearing a leotard.

Longstanding member Kevin Cussack gave us an entertaining return to his icebreaker with stories of scary rats, croquet and regrets about that engagement ring he should have bought.

David Clarkson then launched us into Table Topics with a barrage of alliteration. The topic of the day was no surprise—fools, foolishness and the like.
Thanks to Bee Bathish for introducing us to the idea of retail therapy as: finding your life purpose in the mall.
Alana Bogart trigger our memories of those foolish things from the past that we have hopefully learned from.
Brent Chatterton (with a fish stuck to his back—Sabine did it Brent) reminded us that if you ever see a pub offering free beer, don’t be fooled, it is a joke.
Claire Ruru spoke of those foolish things that remind me of you (and it was not about Brent Ruru dancing and singing to the sounds of Olivia Newton John while doing the dusting wearing a leotard.)
Alannah Vickery ended a great Table Topics session with stories of being fooled by a sibling and 3am bike rides.

Most importantly though a Boaters tradition was created. Called the Boaters Revolution (or maybe the Icebreakers Turn).

Details of the tradition are available upon attendance at Boaters meetings. See you there

Meeting 817 – Working as a Team

Posted by on Mar 18, 2016 in Meetings

Brent Chatterton our resident Master Builder led the charge this morning with the all-important topic ‘Working as a team’.   Like a well set play by the All Blacks, Brent skilfully manoeuvred the team through the ever pressing agenda with a very successful outcome that he was able to throw in one last minute very impromptu table topic to round off a great morning’s team play.

Our word of the day was Ostentatious or Non Ostentatious – showy or flamboyant which I think we call were without using the word – thanks Grammarian Mark Glanville

Speaker 1 – Charlene Hails, one of our newest members, did her wonderful ‘Ice Breaker’ and talked about a condition she picked up after leaving university, after describing something that sounded very horrid she call the condition ‘Adult On sit Swimming’.  Charlene took us on a journey of how she started swimming and from pools she adventured to Open Sea Swims.  What a great ice breaker.

Speaker 2 – a duet – The two Steve’s on the Leadership Team – Steve Kennelly (Treasurer) and Steve Mydlovski (Present) talked to the members about their roles in the Leadership Team and the upcoming AGM.

Speaker 3 – Steve Kennelly again took the stage for his speech about ‘Clean Disruption’.  This was a very powerful food for thought speech. He explained to us about the disruption of a product when a new product is introduced to the consumer, it disrupts the older product and makes is obsolete, such as Wikipedia online disrupted the Encyclopedia books.  Steve referred to a book by Tony Seba – Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation and how it discusses how new energy will be solar or wind, vehicles will be electric and self-driven and we will see incredible disruption by 2030.  Steve proved the fact of this type of disruption with a picture in London with horse drawn vehicles everywhere and one car but 13 years later the same place but the picture had many cars with one horse drawn vehicle.

John McVicar lead the team into Table topics with great team effort by Mo Yakubu, Helen McLeod, Sabine Parry, David Clarkson, Sandra Smith and a sneaky side step by Danny de Hek to finish the meeting.
