Meeting #878 Theme “Slogans

Posted by on Jul 10, 2017 in Meetings

Toastmaster Caleb Vercoe

Caleb proved to us all that we must very good listeners as most of us at todays meeting knew all the marketing slogans he tested us on. So back to the TV ads for me!

Dion Ebrahim our Grammarian for the meeting

Dion started his role by telling us he would be assessing our actual grammar through the meeting and to report who was using slogans. A bit of a challenge in this case as even though we were great at the test of Slogans, not so good at actually using them. Our grammar was in question as well but over all a good report and a very thorough one at that. Well done Dion.

Speeches

Alan Calder
Turn back time

Alan talked about accidents and injuries while doing recreational sports. while Alan has had injuries he focused on his wifes repeated injuries including a broken leg. Moral of the story try and learn from our mistakes and try to avoid the same things and as we get older it becomes more difficult to recover. Stay Smart, Alert, and prepared.

Brent Ruru
Dream Design Do

Brent told us to have a plan or you will find yourself fiting into somebody elses plan. Brent gave us some ideas to inspire Dreaming, writing lists of what matters most, what makes you happy, what you do everyday. Put together experience boards of photos to remind you of whats been achieved.
When making big plans try the analogy of when painting a big fence that looks overwhelming just look at painting a few palings at a time. Then brent told us a story about their travels biking across Canada even though Bears live there and love bikes too. Follow your dreams.

David Clarkson
Over the horizon

We were treated to a great story with photos of his recent trip through Europe This was very inspirational in it self. We all felt like we were there with David and his wife. Amazing pictures David.

Table topics

Helen McLeod did not disappoint with the fun part of the meeting. Helen used Table conversation cards. Each card has a question to be read out and discussed, although catching a couple out. All the table topics speeches were well put together as mini speeches and entertained.

We had some great evaluations this week, although some common themes came through. Simple things. Remember to speak up, look around and keep to time above all enjoy!
Time for a ………?? “world famous in New Zealand”

Meeting #849 Friday November 4th

Speech Marathon

Theme – Power of Speeches

Toastmaster Alana Bogart

Sergeant of Arms Charlene Hails

Charlene Welcomed everyone on time, making us feel happy to be up at this early hour. We were then treated to Alana’s very organised and well explained meeting for our speech marathon with six speakers all ready to go. Alana introducing every speaker and evaluator through the meeting.

Speaker 1 Personal Story By Issac Tanner-Dempsey
Issac treated us to an interesting story about his friends, finishing with some good advice for us. ‘When giving advice Ask questions, Listen then give advice’.

Speaker 2 Photos by Helen McLeod
Helen had a wonderful speech all about the best way to take photos Teaching us about – three parallels, Area, and the Triangles using objects, in this case people. We were treated to some of Helens own photos as props. Helen even used audience involvement to ensure we had learnt the main points. (Hoping I have it right as I am writing from memory!)

Speaker 3 Mentoring, Educational by Steven Mydlowski
Steve explained the ins and outs of becoming a mentor telling us if we have completed the competent Communicators Manual or close to it you can be put down on the list as a mentor. New members are assigned a mentor and our VP of membership Grant Beatie will assist with anyone wanting to become a mentor.

Speaker 4 Elite6 By Danny de Hek
Danny asked an audience member (Sandra) to come up and ‘mock’ a coffee meeting and Danny asked questions to explain his Networking business and how it works and why it works for professionals and people trying to get into the workforce.Danny explained synergies created between the members of elite 6 networking meetings. Thoroughly enjoyed that Toastie award making speech.

Speaker 5 Ancient Liturgy By David Cooper
David explained literature written by people whom had a completely different way of life to modern day. The danger in reading these words written by ancient writers is that the stories may seem barbaric but the importance is, this was the way of life thousands of years ago. David had some very interesting examples, but his main point was that to find the proper meaning of the writer you need to look beyond the differences in culture and time in order to see the relevance of books like the Bible.

Speaker 6 On your Bike by Alan Calder
A brought in two of his Mountain Bikes as props. Alan explained pretty much everything you can know about the bikes, amazing whats on a Mountain Bike nowadays I was fascinated by the seat dropper which drops the seat at the touch of a button, used for going down hill to give you more balance also goes up without dismounting from the bike. Alan explained the benefits of cycling and suggests cycling with friend on the port hills. My days with bikes were very simple, BMX and no breaks or helmets, using sneakers on the back wheel to stop. (My Mother loved that!)

Evaluations
We had some very good Evaluators today with some good tips, commendations and importantly some recommendations. Particularly being reminded to follow our manuals because they do give you all the instructions on how to present a great speech. Over all a very good speech marathon and well done to all who had a role including the audience of Boaters members and guests.
